Her story

She started with a jar of coins.

Nicole lost her father at eight. Her mother worked two jobs, and Nicole raised her little brother after school. Outside the grandest hotel in town, holding his sticky hand, she decided that one day she would walk out of a door like that in a coat she had paid for herself.

Today she is an entrepreneur and a sought-after adviser, a wife, a mother of three, and a runner. She has never raised her voice, and somehow she knows everyone.

She has written down everything life taught her, so that your road might be a little easier.

The book

One life, told in four fires.

From a girl outside a hotel to the woman who said no on the top floor, Nicole tells the story of how a life is grown: hungrily, honestly, and with a great deal of love.

It is a book about money, and about everything money cannot buy. About the man who cost her everything, the marriage she keeps choosing, the desire she keeps alive, the children who arrive as themselves, and the quiet place within that holds you when the world is loud.

Hunger

A mother who sang, a jar of coins, and a velvet stool where she learned that power is choosing.

Rising

The first door, the charming man who took everything, and a kiss on a rainy doorstep.

Fire

A marriage chosen again, a red dress by the sea, and three heartbeats.

Abundance

Four months with Julian Hale, money as a seed, and what success really looks like.

From every ten coins that come to you, one belongs to the woman you will become.

PrologueThe night I said no

The pen was heavier than I expected. Black lacquer, a gold nib, the kind of pen that exists only to sign things that change your life.

I was forty-one years old, standing on the twenty-ninth floor of a hotel in a black silk dress I had bought that same afternoon. The city lay below the glass like a spilled jewelry box. Someone had opened champagne. And across the table, watching me read the last page, was Julian Hale.

He was not handsome the way men in advertisements are handsome. He was handsome the way weather is. Grey at the temples, a voice that never hurried, a way of holding your eyes one second longer than was polite.

“Stay for one drink,” he said, so that only I could hear. “Not with them. With me.” He turned my hand over, very gently, and I felt something flat and cool against my palm. A key card. The top floor.

Her life

Love, faith, work, strength.

The book moves through the whole of a woman’s life, the tender parts and the ambitious ones, without leaving either out.
